Weight loss

Post by Davycc »

Anyone else "on a diet"

Since lockdown I stopped playing squash twice a week, Max passed so walking the dog stopped even if it was more a stroll at the end. Sitting in at night I found myself having a little more red wine and snacks. I'd put on over a stone in weight. So I started walking the new mutt a few times a day, granted he's a pup so we don't do great distances but it's more than I've been doing. My old squash mate doesn't think it wise to start again as our medical specialist called it "the widow maker"

So for 3 weeks now I've cut back on the vino, reduced portion size and cut out snacking. So far I've lost half a stone in old money.

I'm probably posting this as an extra incentive but is anyone else trying to lose weight / exercise more?

I am always watching my weight, when i was playing footie I was 11 1/2 st now i`m 12 1/2 st but I am coming up 64, I have an active job and work hard, i run at least once a week around 4 to 5 miles and have entered the LA 10k, the trouble is I enjoy my food as well and chocolate, when I feel i`m putting a bit on I tend to cut down for a bit to knock a few extra pounds off.
Sounds like you are doing well with yours Davy.

I’m not dieting now, but a number of years ago when I finished work, a combination of more beer, takeaways and lack of exercise saw me put on over two and a half stone in weight in 6 months. As many know, I’m only a little fella, around 5ft 7, so getting to over 13 and a half stone with a pot belly wasn’t good, not good at all. In fact, it was disgusting.

Anyway, I was walking back to my car from the supermarket and decided to call in at the local leisure centre. The manager gave me a bit of a tour, it just felt right, no mad body builders or anything like that, so I joined there and then. They gave me a programme to match my goals, and I committed to going three times a week.

I also spoke to an old work colleague, who was massively into fitness, and she introduced me to the books of Bill Phillips, Body For Life and Eating For Life. I followed them both, and went from 13.5 stone to 10.5 stone within 5 months. I deliberately put more weight back on, and my weight is consistently around 11st now which is pretty much spot on. My Mrs says I have a great body too, she’s biased of course, but I’m not too shabby for a 50 year old bloke and I still go to the gym three times a week.

I can’t recommend the Bill Phillips books highly enough, absolutely brilliant they are.

Credit to you mate for doing it

I'm struggling - got a nasty problem with my right foot/ankle which means I definitely can't run or exercise-cycle any more, and walking isn't as good as it was either (currently using a crutch for outdoors)... so my weight has crept up. I genuinely drink v little alcohol these days due to lockdown but it hasn't affected my weight at all :( . My 'ideal weight' is around 14 stone but I'm around a stone over that. I think the older we get, the less food we should eat if trying to maintain a certain lower weight, as the exercise has less effect on the old physique.

Yep I'm just starting a weight loss campaign but not the first time over the last 20 years or so have been on a yo yo moving between around14 stone to just under 16stone.
Sadly at the wrong end of that scale following lockdown.

Story goes back much further though in my 20s was in the region of 12 stone and kept it in that region despite eating too much (love food) and drinking beer most nights.
Played lots of sport and working as a electrician in industry installing heavy machinery, I was doing lots of climbing and lifting which kept the weight in check.
In my 30s and early 40s I got a number of promotions, charge hand, supervisor, assistant engineer, engineer and finally manager. With each promotion the ratio of physical work to office/meetings changed but I didn't change my bad habits.
Before I realised it my weight went up to around 15 stone before I first did a weight loss effort, got back to 14 stone and have been on the yo yo ever since.

Still love lots of things I shouldn't but changed many things in my diet.
Sports wise I no longer play football (kept playing 5 aside to late 40s), stopped golf 5 years back but still play table tennis. Some are surprised it's actually physically hard and fast when played properly. I've played national league, national tournament circuit, County and numerous local leagues so a decent level.
Haven't played since lockdown apart from a few practice sessions in 2 years so thought it was retirement time. However will be picking the bat up again this season as been asked to captain Yorkshire Over 60s 2nd team so need to hit the fitness button to prepare.

Have one of them pedometers and we try to do 15,000 steps per day (6 to 7 mile). Haven't lately as like ANS had a injury but soon be back on that track.

So Davy I'm with you, thanks for this thread will use as a motivator.

Scary but 15stone 12lb this morning, watch this space.

We have done a Wednesday weigh in for over 3 years now and only miss it if two of the three of us are of at the same time. In January I hit 14st 5lbs. I had never hit 13st until Christmas 2019 so hitting nearly 14 1/2 really hit home. This morning I was 13st 11 1/4 and am aiming for 13st.

Like BB not being the tallest extra weight really shows lol.

Off topic but can’t remember which team but one of their fans was a bit overweight & Leeds fans were chanting I Predict a Diet & Have You Ever Seen a Salad. Love terrace humour. :D
